How to get here?

GETTING HERE IS PART OF THE ADVENTURE!

The journey from Cusco to Manu is an adventure unto itself. It is about an eight hour drive. Unless you are a very experienced driver in mountainous and jungle terrain, we do not recommend driving yourself.

The road  paved the first two hours of the trip. The whole way you can enjoy amazing panoramic views of the Andes and the vibrant forests of the Andean foothills.

There are lots of multi-day fully guided tour options, however, if you are more of an independent traveller looking for an economical way to explore Manu, we would be happy to arrange for a 4x4 truck with an experienced driver to bring you to Gallito de Las Rocas Lodge in Pillcopata. From here, you can chose from a variety of guided day trips or explore on your own. A return journey by truck can arranged or you can take the public bus back.

Transport

PRIVATE TRANSPORT

We can always organize your visit with a safe private driver.

It takes about 7 hours to get to Pillcopata from Huancarani, Paucartambo, Cusco,  Acjanaco (entering the Manu Biosphere Reserve), Asunción, homeland, Pillcopata.

Transport in private van, Cusco-Gallito de las Rocas Lodge: US $150.

Travel recommendations

The best time to visit is at May to November the average annual temperature is 25º C - 38º C. However, we get an interesting weather phenomena here called the friaje. For a few days, cold winds blow from Patagonia North into the Amazon. It can get surprisingly cold in the jungle(11ºC!) during these! So bring at least one set of warm clothes. Between May to November is the dry season, which makes traveling easier. November to May is the rainy season, where the forest is beautiful but there are frequent rainstorms and as a result the roads and trails can be quite muddy.

LOCAL GUIDE

We recommend you go with one of our local guides, because the trail network can be confusing. Guides are also invaluable in helping you spot wildlife in the forest. Please let us know with your booking if you need one and we can arrange for you.

SPECIALIST GUIDES

If you have particular interest in birds, let us know ahead of time and we can arrange a professional birding guide(complete with crucial equipment such as a spotting scope and experience in our region). For those interested in butterflies, we can even arrange for a butterfly expert who can help you find, photograph, and ID some of the many hundreds of species of butterflies we have here. Just let us know!

HEALTH PRECAUTIONS

We suggest that you schedule appointment at the clinic in advance of 4 to 5 weeks before your visit to the Amazon, have consultation with your doctor about potential medications you may wish to take. Yellow fever has not been found in the Kosñipata Valley, but suggest you take into consideration the respective vaccine. To reduce exposure to biting insects, we recommend long sleeves and appropriate insect repellent(formulations containing 30% deet, or picaridin for those who do not wish to use deet are best). However, at this elevation insects seldom a problem and the rooms are screened.

GALLITO DE LAS ROCAS - MACHU WASI

After a delicious breakfast we went by car to visit the Machuy Wasi lagoon. We are moving slowly in search of birds and monkeys. In the lagoon our guide takes us on a handmade raft, while he teaches us many of the resident birds such as: hoatzin (Opisthocomus hoazín) of pre-historic aspect, camungos (Anhima cornuta), caciques, oropendelas and many others. Before the sun begins to shine too much, we go to the shadow of the forest and walk on the trails near the lagoon. With a bit of luck we find monkeys like: stumps (Callicebus moloch) or capuchins (Cebus apella). Here also the guide teaches us many tropical plants and their medicinal and practical uses. After lunch we take the car back to our hostel in Pillcopata. But before arriving we visited the wildlife refuge, "Dos Loritos" (optional does not include within the services of the tour). Here we can meet many animals that are normally almost impossible to see in nature because of their nocturnal habits. They also allow us to take pictures.

Included:  BL

Hoatzin, (Opisthocomus hoazin), primitive chicken-sized bird of South American swamps, principally in the Amazon and Orinoco river basins. The young possess two large claws on each wing, a trait that has led some scientists to link the species with the fossil Archaeopteryx of the dinosaur era. The hoatzin is the only bird with a digestive system that ferments vegetation as a cow does, which enables it to eat leaves and buds exclusively. Hoatzins feed on swamp plants, grinding foliage in a greatly enlarged crop (not the gizzard, as in other birds). Adults can fly clumsily for short distances, but they spend most of their time perched, digesting their leafy food. A large rubbery callus on the bird’s breastbone acts as a tripod to keep it from falling over when its stomach is distended.
